No jerking around Just bad ass food.

I’m sorry it has been awhile since my last post.  Life got in the way, in the form of busy work days and a killer head cold.  Having now kicked the cold, Allie, Deaner, Shaina and I decided to try out a new place.
Soda Jerks is where we decided to break the streak.  I'm just going to jump right into this one.  Soda Jerks has a huge selection of sodas obviously being in the name.  They have a lacking selection of wobbly pops. You can however get a 40 of malt liquor, a Big Bear that they serve in a paper bag "just like the good old days".
The menu isn't huge.  It has an array of appetizers and sandwich's.  This is where it gets good.  Holy S#@! the second thing on the menu is the "Heart Attack Platter" It is chilli cheese fries served with poutine.  As you can see (above left) Deaner gives it the thumbs up.  We also had deep fried pickles,  this one is not for everyone.  We all thought they were awesome but I could see some people just being right turned off of this (So don't be barking at me if you don't like'em).  For the mains Allie (seen above right) couldn't resist the double chilli dog.  I tried the Original burger.  The double chilli dog came as expected but the burger I ordered isn't normal (above middle).  It comes with corned beef on it!! Not just some out of the package lunch meat, but thick cut massive amounts of corned beef! SO BAD ASS!  This is what I have been looking for.  Something different.  Something out of the ordinary.  Something that no doubt is F'n horrible for you but you just don't care.  I barely put the burger down....actually I don't think I did put it down.  It was fantastic!  It would have been perfect except the corned beef was ice cold.  If they had served the corned beef warmed up to burger temp, I would have went back and given the cook a hug a serious high five then probably another hug or two.
Here is the low down; Service was par at best. It was the server’s first day but to counter that, it wasn't very busy at all.  They burned the bun on Allies chilli dog, which took away from the joy that only chilli together with hot dogs can bring.  The chilli was bland and runny.  A heartier more flavourful chilli would take the heart attack platter and chilli cheese dog a long way.  The burger would definitely be top five in my ranking of burgers.  If the corned beef wasn't served the temperature of Chris Brown's career, the cook would have gotten a very uncomfortable hug, high five and maybe even a slow clap.  You can find soda jerks at: 17520 100ave or Call at 780 486-5375.
I will go back again one day and just pray that they have perfected what they have started!

Blue is the way I feel about this one!

Allie suggested that we go for dinner tonight and review a place.  I of course thought this was a fantastic idea.
Allie was out and happened to park right in front of the Blue Plate Diner.  We figured why not try it?
After arriving I waited almost ten minutes just to get a drink while waiting for everyone to arrive.  The Menu isn't huge and the prices are OK.  We started with some appetizers. We tried fried maple corn bread and green onion cakes.  Both were very very good.  As a main course we found that they have Mac & Cheese on the menu.  Figuring that any place that has the balls to put M & C on the menu, it has to be fantastic. Three of the four of us ordered it.  The Mac & Cheese was good but lets face it Mac & Cheese isn't that hard to make.  Add cheese sauce to macaroni and there you go.  Luckily it was served with a perfectly cooked side of veggies.  Allie tried the enchiladas.  The enchiladas came with a side of refried beans that also were fantastic.  The enchilada's however were very bland (she doused it in Frank's Red Hot Sauce) and all together not very good.
Here is the low down on the Blue Plate Diner:
Service was poor.  I'm sure that there will be some job openings soon.  We heard at least three sets of plates smash while dining there.  The food can be skipped, just order the side dishes and appetizers, because they were the only stand out good food.  I have heard that they have a great breakfast but I have been put off enough not to try it.  The address is below if you want to see for yourself.  I don't recommend it, unlike the last place I reviewed.  I could give a rats ass if they mind that I reviewed their establishment.

Damn near perfect Smoked Meat Sandwich!

So it wasn't on the list.  (Thank you to people for the suggestions i will try my best to get to them all) But swung by Devaney's for a pint and a bite.  Figuring in the spirit of the blog I should order something new.  Now it jumped off the menu!  Montreal smoked meat sandwich.  It showed up and was damn fantastic.  Was like a punch in the mouth of flavor.  It came grilled with a good side of pickles and I had a salad as a side. (trying to watch my figure so no fries) Now I don't think this is a signature sandwich for the city.  But go eat one.  I was all over it like a fat kid on Chocolate cake...who has a skinny kid trying to eat his cake.  The fat kid would be all like *back hand skinny kid* get the F$%# away from my cake.  Then take that mother down (the cake) in like two bites.  Thats not exactly the way it went down.  But The sandwich met it's master real quick.  Anyways go swing by Devaney's the food has always been good there and I hope they don't get mad that I reviewed there action without their knowledge.

This is the start of a beautiful foodship!

So this is me Notorious Neil Mechanic by day and self proclaimed moon lighting food critic.  My wife Allie and I own a small automotive repair shop in Edmonton Alberta.  We work hard and love life. Now in this I also love food.  I Always have and can definitely be described as an eater.  Now it seems that every city has it's "signature food" or "food you have to try".  After growing up in the Edmonton area my whole life I still don't know what these foods are or where to find them.  Time to change that.  But I need your help.  Email me your suggestion of a food or location Nkorpesio@yahoo.ca and I will pick one a week.  Then I will go and see for myself if your your picked place has what it takes.  I will post my finding along with pics and links on this blog for all too see and judge for themselves. I will be fair in all of my finding.  I will also be blunt and pull no punches.  Honest to goodness strait up reviews and i'm sure they will be a bit humorous and have pics to go along.  So start sending the emails and I can set up my first outing to find "The Best" food in The Alberta Capital region.
